ABout the Artist

Alex Coronel is an American contemporary artist who works primarily in painting and installation, but is also active in other media. He is a Texas native and a second time Austin resident. In recent years he’s exhibited heavily across Texas and New Mexico. Coronel has been working as a craftsman/woodworker for Trophyology in Austin. This type work has led to a resurgence of sculpture in his practice, adding to his multidisciplinary portfolio. Playfulness is crucial when it comes to his work. It has aided his evolution of strictly being an abstract painter into becoming a multimedia artist. You can catch his painting ‘\ ////‘ hanging in Austin City Hall until 2024.

“My recent work has revolved around interrupted space with juxtaposed and intrusive imagery. Often imagining a fraction of a moment of any thought process opposite of a meditative brain. A cluster fuck for short. Repetition in my process doesn’t come easy for me. I welcome, embrace, and at times, crave change. So when I started to notice certain imagery and characters repeating themselves in my work I felt I had to catch ‘em all before they disappeared. The fact that they appeared naturally meant, for me, I had to take care of them. They’re sometimes small and perhaps unnoticeable, but they help ground myself and possibly the viewer in this otherwise psychotic, chaotic fun house I call my work.”
