inventory-ing
a multimedia group exhibition
August 23 - September 21, 2024
Contracommon is proud to present Inventory-ing, a multimedia group exhibition curated by artist Sara Aleyce Roma and Favored Channels. Favored Channels is a loose multidisciplinary artistic collective and amorphous curatorial organism formed in 2021. The Favored Channels are those that fall between fields of knowledge, between sense-making and instability. Following threads through research to play, we invite contemplation in spaces of absurd spectacle.
Past curated events have included video gardens, projections, poetry, risograph printing, web art, interactive sculpture, zines, puppet karaoke, experimental music, backpacks filled with crickets, and UFO pondering.
To take stock of. To account for. To break the whole into its constituent parts. To take inventory is to re-examine the meaning of a collection, a memory, or a context. The artists here present works which aim to materialize past events, re-hash memento, reflect on the imperfect methods of preservation and keepsake, and showcase the artistic impulse to catalog and archive.
Take inventory of how you feel, inventory of your body and environment, take inventory of the objects and memories that are important to you.
In this process what forgotten things are found? What things can be disposed of? What new relations can be found between the things you carry with you? How do you collect? How does a collection take on more importance than individual pieces? When trying to explain an event, a moment, a memory what props do you use? If a happening is irreproducible how can you create a satisfactory representation to embody it?
These are some of the questions brought forth by the work presented by this collection of Houston and Austin artists, painters, photographers, performers, book sellers, and space-makers.
