ETHEREAL AND UNFAMILIAR - LANDSCAPES BECOME LIMINAL IN EXHIBITIONS BY TAYLOR BAILEY AND MARCUS DELMAR CLARKE

Contracommon is proud to present two experimental exhibitions by local artists, found/forgotten by Taylor Bailey and Sans Land by Marcus “Delmar” Clarke. The concurrent exhibitions will open with a reception on Saturday, September 25th from 7 – 10pm, and will be on view in the gallery from September 13th through October 15th, 2021.

The artists behind found/forgotten and Sans Land use familiar elements of nature as a way to explore identity, place, and belonging. These exhibitions of sculptural and installation work will each use stone, rock, and dirt in combination with light and digital interfaces in order to create ethereal and unfamiliar scenes within the context of the gallery. These liminal spaces will encourage visitors to experience the duality of both a novel unfamiliarity and nostalgic belonging through the use of commonplace earthly materials and imagery of the landscapes of the American West.

Taylor Bailey’s practice is largely based in multimedia drawing and printmaking techniques, exploring themes of memory, psychogeography and place-making. She studied Studio Art and Art History, graduating from Southwestern University in 2017. Drawing on her past experiences studying outdoors and in underground caverns across the state of Texas, Taylor’s work examines the relationship between landscape and identity. She currently lives in Austin, Texas, and is the Executive Director at Contracommon.

Marcus “Delmar” Clarke is a transmedia artist who is fixated on creating liminal spaces by combining mundane materials like dirt, rocks, cinder blocks, and construction materials, and giving them an ethereal quality through light and sound. His faith (and doubts within that faith) drives his practice, revolving around the pursuit of life to the full in mind, body, and spirit. He studied at Pratt Institute and later graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2019. Marcus is currently living in Austin, Texas, and is on the cusp of a move to Salt Lake City, Utah.

found/forgotten and Sans Land will be on view concurrently at the Contracommon Gallery from September 13th – October 15th, 2021. The gallery is open to the public Fridays through Sundays from 12pm – 6pm, and by appointment Monday through Thursday. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 25th from 7-10pm, and is free and open to the public.
