Contracommon is proud to present Within, an exhibition of works by Darryl Demps Jr., Brie Henderson, and Nathan Sing, running from July 31 to September 4, 2023. A reception, free and open to the public, will be held at Contracommon on Saturday, August 5 from 6-9pm.
“Within is a group exhibition that explores overcoming lifelong challenges of self worth and forming a solid sense of identity. The work reflects [the artists’] individual lifelong journeys of self love that comes with time spent choosing yourself first. Taking self worth out of others hands and into their own.” In their respective works, Demps, Henderson, and Sing, use dreamy color palettes and whimsical compositions to invite you into their worlds.
Brie Henderson is currently a Houston based artist who works out of her home studio. Although she was born in Texas, she was primarily raised in a small town in the midwest. In 2018 she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. After graduating she furthered her education in St. Louis, Missouri at Washington University in St. Louis, receiving her Masters of Fine Arts in 2020. Through a series of intimate watercolor and mixed media paintings, Brie references bodies, intimate interactions and the ambiguity within the two.
Nathan Sing is a central Texas based artist living out of San Antonio; Texas State University Alumni, double major in Painting and Graphic Design. Merging the two disciplines, Nathan creates his highly colorful paintings. His love for quiet, even mundane, settings and use of color to convey emotions make his work unique. Nathan also works as a production assistant for two prominent Texas based Artists, McKay Otto and Gil Bruvel.
Darryl Demps, Jr., a multi-media creative based in Austin, TX, combines painting, wood-carving, and photography to express his experiences and inspirations from life. In his artwork, Demps emphasizes color to capture the energy of the subject matter— whether that be inspired by a person, memory, or feeling. He is also a theatrical artist, with a focus on professional roller skating and choreography. Demps aims to use his knowledge of the visual arts and his experience with rollerskating to create a new expression, one unique to him.
The opening reception for Within will take place on Saturday, August 5 from 6-9pm, and will feature refreshments, as well as talks from all three artists on exhibit. Within will be on view in the Contracommon gallery from July 31 - September 4. The gallery is open to the public from 12-6 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with private weekday viewing appointments available at calendly.com/contracommon.
