EXHIBITION OF FIGURATIVE WORKS ALLOWS VIEWERS TO EXPERIENCE DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES ON THE HUMAN FIGURE
Contracommon is proud to present Bodies Akin, an exhibition showcasing intimate and intense, even psychedelic at times, representations of the human figure. The exhibition will be on view in the gallery from March 11th through April 8th, 2024. An opening reception for the participating artists will be held at Contracommon on Saturday, March 16th from 6-9 pm; it is free to attend and open to the public.
Current Contracommon studio members Darryl Demps Jr. and Holly Cerna, as well as former studio member Molly Knobloch, began organizing monthly figure drawing sessions at the arts nonprofit’s Bee Cave headquarters in 2021. Through this practice and witnessing the work of their growing community, the trio reflected on the varied perspectives that appear across figurative works. Bodies Akin was created as an opportunity to showcase these many expressions. The paintings and sculptures included in the exhibition range from penetrating self-portraiture to kaleidoscopic multi-figure compositions. All the works, in some way, speak to the human experience and present an array of expressions that are relatable, but unique to each individual artist.
Participating artists include: Gil Bruvel, Leah Bury, Holly Cerna, Darry Demps Jr., Brandon Dudley, Gerardo Gomez Escamilla, Morgan Grigsby, Molly Knobloch, Sadé Lawson, Celica Ledesma, Rewon Shimray and Chris Tobar.
Bodies Akin will be on view in the Contracommon gallery from March 11th through April 8th, 2024. The gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 12pm – 6pm, with private viewing appointments available Monday - Thursday upon request at calendly.com/contracommon. The exhibition will open with a reception on Saturday, March 16th from 6-9pm, which is free and open to the public.
