Contracommon is proud to present A Becoming, an exhibition of works by Jesus Treviño and Kelsey Baker. The exhibition will be on view in the gallery from November 1st through December 3rd, 2021. A Becoming will open with a reception on Saturday, November 6th from 6 – 10pm in conjunction with Contracommon’s programming for the Austin Studio Tour. In this exhibition the artists approach the idea of existing in a state of flux from two distinct perspectives. Giving form to concepts and feelings that often happen invisibly, and over time, their works consolidate traces of protracted experiences of time spent in between.
Jesus Treviño received a BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2018, and is
currently an MFA candidate in Painting/Drawing at the University of Texas at Austin. His work is rooted from his experience being raised on the U.S./Mexico border and deals with the erasure of history, displacement of people, and its residual personal, emotional and social effects. He had his first solo exhibition in 2019 at the Presa House Gallery, San Antonio and has been included in group exhibitions at the Field Projects Gallery, NYC; Carlsbad Museum and Art Center, Carlsbad, NM; Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, TX; K Space Contemporary, Corpus Christi, TX; Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts, where he was awarded Best in Show; and recently he curated a group exhibition titled, "Between Two Worlds" at the Visual Arts Center in Austin, TX.
Kelsey Baker, who received an MFA from Washington State University in 2020, is an artist based in Austin, Texas and a member of Contracommon. She uses intermedia practices—incorporating painting, video, and installation—to invent surreal landscapes and evoke liminal spaces. Her work presents the familiar as strange using distortions in placement and scale, allowing the viewer access to realms or states of being that might be otherwise inaccessible. Viewers are invited to experience the in-between spaces. Her work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions nationally, such as the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art; New Texas Talent XXIV at Craighead Green Gallery, Dallas, TX; The People’s Gallery, Austin, TX; Terrain Gallery, Spokane,WA; Gspot Gallery, Houston, TX; and Off the Cost, Portland, OR.
A Becoming will be on view at the Contracommon gallery from November 1st – December 3rd, 2021. The gallery is open to the public Fridays through Sundays from 12pm – 6pm, and by appointment Monday through Thursday. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, November 6th from 6-10pm, and is free and open to the public. For more information, appointments or donations, please email contact@contracommon.org.
